End of Poverty Foundation Global Workshop & Conference
"End of Poverty Approach is a Success!"
The integral approach of development aid such as that promoted by the End of Poverty foundation is successful. This was proven during the well-attended conference that the foundation organized in Rotterdam on June 11.
During this conference five relief organizations that have adopted the End of Poverty concept exchanged information and experiences with each other. People from the regions where aid is being provided (India, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka) also talked enthusiastically about the progress of various projects.
The integral approach consists of several main components: increasing agricultural production, improving health care, ensuring adequate education, installing electricity, providing clean water and establishing microcredits.
The aid primarily focuses on small communities that are included in their entirety because the End of Poverty concept is devoted to fostering community spirit and a cooperative approach. After aid activities have begun in a village, the goal is to work towards the community being able to support itself within five years.
During the conference experiences from Asia and Africa proved that this concept works and that the so-called social return of investment can even be measured so that the effectiveness of the aid is demonstrable.
Furthermore, during group discussions it was ascertained that existing and potential sponsors were satisfied with the results presented during the conference. Evert de Blok, the Chairman of End of Poverty, expects a large increase in this type of aid in the near future:
“Development aid is under pressure, partly due to the credit crisis, but also because too much money is disappearing into a bottomless pit. But when you hear people from Asia and Africa saying that the integral approach simply works well, then government agencies cannot help but to increasingly opt for this approach.”
