SOCIO-EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
From End Of Poverty
ASSIST strongly believes socio-educational development of the community and its population is essential before taking up any activity to improve their living standards. Forming and strengthening POs is the first and foremost activity undertaken by ASSIST. First, efforts will be made to build up a good rapport with the villagers by way of house visits, group discussions, mass meetings, cultural programmes, etc. Once a good rapport is build up with the target families, a mass meeting is organised to make the people conscious of their problems and to find probable solutions to overcome them. One of the common solutions expected to be derived in all these target communities is the effective community organisation.
Possible interventions could be:
3. People’s Organisations (Self-Help Groups, Village Development Society, Mutually Aided Cooperative Thrift and Credit Society, etc.)
ASSIST strongly believes that sustainable communities could be promoted only through the formation and strengthening of people’s organisations
Through the systematic development process in these target communities, ASSIST envisages that people owned, managed and controlled people’s organisation should emerge and it should acquire all the required capacities and capabilities to solve the problems hindering the progress of their community on their own with the support of government and other initiatives. In the process, it might look that activities are getting delayed due to their ignorance, lack of knowledge, skills and abilities, but in the long-run the activity executed by the people on their own with the external support will only sustain and not vice versa.
With this premise, ASSIST emphasises the promotion and strengthening of people’s organisation as the first phase of its intervention to attain sustainable development. People’s organisations thus formed should execute the activities on their own and attain the confidence to ensure the sustainable development of their respective communities.
